Veronica Chapa and Adela Pineda Franco invite readers to explore the power of history, memory, and cultural legacy in Malinalli and Los Muertos: Day of the Dead Fiction. In Malinalli, Chapa crafts a fictionalized retelling about one of Mexicoʼs most misunderstood historical figures — a young girl turned interpreter who becomes a political force, navigating colonization, betrayal, and magic with resilience and courage. Los Muertos, an anthology edited by Pineda Franco, celebrates the rich tapestry of Día de los Muertos traditions through fictional stories that honor, question, and reimagine the ways we remember those who have passed. Illuminating the threads that bind us across time and culture, both works offer reflections on identity, memory, and the enduring power of storytelling.
